Sydney's  Seven Bridges Walk

Sydney's Seven Bridges Walk

The Seven Bridges Walk is a 28-kilometre circuit round Sydney’s scenic harbour. The walk can be done at any time of year and offers fantastic views and varied urban landscapes.

The walk:

  • meanders through parks with ideal picnic and resting spots

  • winds through beautiful bushland where parrots and other native birds can be easily seen

  • crosses 7 bridges over Sydney Harbour and Parramatta River

  • passes through various waterside suburbs full of cafes and bars where you can eat and drink to your heart’s content.

To plan your walk:

The entire walk, which incorporates some steep sections, can be done in one go. It will take you between 51/2 to 8 hours depending on your level of fitness and the amount of stops you take. Alternatively, you can do it in stages. For example, you can get a train to North Sydney Station, walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge and through the city, then catch a train at Town Hall back to your destination.

The event

On the last Sunday in October each year, the Cancer Council organises an official event based round the Seven Bridges Walk. Participants’ registration fees go to cancer research and equipment. There are bands playing, water refilling stations and food stalls at various points along the way, and as it’s near Halloween, certain streets you walk along have fantastic décor on display including models of corpses, witches, coffins and spider-filled cobwebs. It’s a really fun day out.

Buses operate around the entire route so if you get tired or do not have time to do the entire walk, you can take this transport to where you started or another point on the route.

If you’re in Sydney on 28 October 2018, enjoy walking and want to help eliminate cancer, consider participating.

We’ve done the walk seven times with our friend Ian, and always enjoy it. Highlights are harbour views, Halloween Street, the feeling you’ve done something good for the community and the cold beer at the end.

Getting there

Most suburbs on the route are accessible by public transport, either train or bus, and if your walk incorporates the city section you can get either. Google or visit Sydney's trip planner for more information.

Why do it?

  • If you’re a tourist, see the major sights of Sydney all in one go: this walk passes by most of them including the Opera House, Darling Harbour and new Barangaroo Precinct and you walk across the Harbour Bridge.

  • If you’re a Sydneysider, get together with your friends and family for a fun day out.

  • Take amazing photos and video clips to display on social media or share with friends.

  • Keep fit or get fitter.

  • If you're there for the event, you help people with cancer: your registration fee goes straight into Cancer Council initiatives.
